Electric Scooters and Segways Banned from Beijing's Roads
By Justine Lopez
Electric scooters and segways have officially been banned from Beijing's roadways. The new law went into effect on Monday, CRIENGLISH.com reports.
A fine of RMB10 will be issued to anyone caught breaking the new law. Offenders will also be given a verbal warning not to ride their e-scooters and segways on the capital's roads again.
Electric scooters and segways are a popular mode of transportation in Beijing. However, it can be dangerous and illegal to drive them on the same roads that are used by faster vehicles. They are notorious for having poor brakes and lights, which can lead to accidents, especially at night.
According to a recent study conducted by the Beijing's Consumers' Association, 19 out of 20 of the electric scooters and segways that were tested had problems braking, and 16 out of 20 were able to exceed China’s advisory speed of 20km/h.
Traffic authorities in Shanghai recently implemented an initiative to ban electric scooters from the city’s roads.
